Offshore call-centres -
who benefits?

The past few years has seen the movement of swathes of UK call centre jobs to low cost locations such as India. But who benefits?

Certainly not customers. Having got used to dealing with call centres in the UK, customers suddenly found themselves in the hands of people thousands of miles away with no direct experience of UK culture or issues.

Certainly not call centre staff. Many people turned to call centres for employment after the demise of traditional industries. To see their workplaces closing and jobs taken away in favour of cheap labour abroad is a double blow.

Certainly not the tax payer. Loss of UK jobs means less tax coming in and more benefits paid out.

The only beneficiaries are the corporations who have cut costs and sacrificed service by moving UK jobs abroad. Unlike manufacturing, where the movement of work to the Far East has resulted in cheaper goods for consumers, these cost savings have not been passed on. We have not seen cheaper bank charges or reduced insurance premiums.
